Caera Denoir is an alacryan noble of highblood Denoir who becomes interested in Arthur and forms a party with him to go down into the Relictombs. She disguises herself as a male ascender called Haedrig at first, but is later exposed after the events of the Mirror Room.
She and Arthur become coworkers at the Central Academy and companions in ascents in the relictombs. She witnessed him both obtaining the relic armor in the Blood Relic Zone and speaking to the Second Dijnn Remnant. Later during the victoriad, she watches Arthur cripple Nico, kill Cadell, and then escape from Agrona.
Later, she learns of Arthur's true identity as Lance Godspell, and decides to join Seris against Orlaeth.[1] She is a part of the full scale revolt against the Vritra to help Arthur against Agrona, in order to save Alacrya and Dicathen from the war with the gods as it will burn them all as fuel for the fire. Later, she is sent by Seris to the Dwarven city of Vildorial in Dicathen to bring Arthur back to Alacrya as his assistance is needed. However, she was betrayed by one of Seris's allies, Wolfrum, and was almost captured by Dragoth, but in the end, she succeeds in escaping to Dicathen. Caera is then imprisoned by the lance Bairon Wykes when she arrives in Vildorial until Arthur returns, who at the time is absent from Vildorial.[2]
Unfortunately, when Arthur arrived back in Vildorial, he was summoned to the Hearth by Avier to meet with Aldir, Mordain and Wren.[3] Arthur entered the Aether Realm to revive Sylvie and gain his third layer in his Aether core, but this took him two months as the aether realm is disconnected from the real world.[4] During this time, the dragons arrived as a part of Arthur's and Kezess' deal to protect Dicathen. Caera was tortured by a dragon named Vajrakor who was assigned as the guardian of Vildorial. Arthur later arrived with Varay and frees Caera from her imprisonment. She embraces him and then slapped him as she was angry at him for leaving her for two months. Arthur accepts her anger and apologizes that he did not know she was waiting for him.[5]
After Caera has healed from the ordeal, she, along with Arthur, Sylvie, Regis, Eleanor, Boo and Chul depart for Alacrya via the Relictombs. They finally arrive at the second level of the Relictombs where an exhausted Seris is waiting for them, and Caera is briefly reunited with her adopted blood.[6] Arthur, Sylvie and Chul go to battle Exeges while Caera, Regis and Eleanor stay behind. When the group returns from the battle, it is decided that Seris and her rebels will go to Dicathen via tempus wrap. Agrona has given an offer of clemency to everyone who will abandon the rebellion, but a considerable amount of people still follow Seris to Dicathen, including Caera, her brother and her parents.[7]
As the final battle with Agrona approaches, Arthur decides not to involve Caera in his plans as the alacryan runes she bears can pose a threat. As expected, her runes does ignite when Agrona gives the order for all alacryans to join the Second Invasion of Dicathen, but she is able to resist with the help of Eleanor and instead tries to dissuade the alacryan forces invading Vildorial.[8] She is found by her parents, who share the news of Lauden's death with her, before they are ambushed by Justus who in turn kills Caera's loyal guard, Taegen, and injures the other, Arian.[9] She, along with the other alacryans, are later imprisoned in Vildorial while awaiting news of whether they shall be returned to Alacrya or not.[10]
Later on, after Arthur's brief return from Epheotus, Caera, along with many other alacryan soldiers, are allowed to return to Alacrya. They arrive via teleportation gates at Cargidan, where Caera comes face to face with Walter Kaenig. Seris has told her to create order within the confused alacryan ranks when she arrived. Walter and his blood have taken temporary control over the city and they deny Agrona's defeat. His resistance does not affect Caera, who quickly subdues him, and she proceeds to plan for how to help the people and the city.[11] The situation eventually grows too difficult to handle and she sends a message to Arthur to ask for help,[12] but he is unable to come and hopes that Caera will resolve the situation with Seris' help.[13]
During the last battle, the Battle of Taegrin Caelum, she takes on a significant role, leading the dicathian forces and alacryan rebels to victory agains the remaining Vritra loyalist, killing Wolfrum Redwater in the process[14], all while Arthur battles Agrona and Kezess.[15] Following the Confluence, Caera once again plays a vital role in the diplomacy and negotiations between the "lessers" of both Alacrya and Dicathen, and the Asura.[16] She is later elected to join the newly formed Alacryan Assembly as the representative of her hometown, Cargidan.[17] She quickly rises through the ranks and is eventually elected as the president of the assembly.[18]Appearance[]
Caera has red eyes and midnight blue, almost navy hair. Arthur describes her as statuesque while Regis describes her as gorgeous with a pair of large breasts.
In the official art she was portrayed with the following appearance: She was rather tall compared to her mentor, Seris. She has midnight blue hair cascades down her back, framing the black horns that arch in a U-shape from her temples like dark, elegant crown. Her white button-up with gold buttons and straps in a criss cross pattern across her stomach. The shirt is tucked into her gauntlets and clings tightly to her ample chest, the gold buttons holding firm over her mounds. Her form-fitting,opaque black pants hug her toned legs, cinched at the waist by a gold-buckled belt. The overall look is sleek and commanding, combining elegance and power in perfect harmony. She holds a curved, crimson longsword with tan engravings along the blade, a black hint with a tanish guard. She sports black, clawed gauntlets that go up to her elbow, a crimson color palm of the gauntlets.
Each horn had two separate points: the main horns swept upwards and forward, while the smaller fang-shaped pair pointed back behind, framing her head like a dark crown. Thin golden rings adorned each of the smaller spurs.
After entering the zone of the Four Clans, aka. the winter zone, she revealed her crown shaped dark horns indicating her awakened Vritra powers.
Haedrig[]
As Haedrig, Caera looks like a slim man with curly moss-green hair and deep-set brown eyes.
Personality[]
Other than her deceased brother, Caera has had no connections up until meeting Grey. Because her brother often took her to the Relictombs, she goes into them for her own enjoyment nowadays. She has no interest in war or glory of war with Dicathen, knowing it is a self-serving conquest, as she does not enjoy killing those who did not hurt her thanks to her mentor's teachings. Like Seris, she sympathize with the dicathiens for the suffering they went through because of her people being pawns in the Vritra—Asura conflict. She shows respect to those who catch her interest, like Grey.
Background[]
Caera was born into a family with Vritra blood. After being verified as having Vritra blood traces, she was adopted by Highblood Denoir, a family that was supposed to raise her and train her. However, due to the pressure from the Vritra to keep her safe, her relationship with them was always on the edge. She could only feel at ease with her brother, Sevren, who would even sneak out with her to train. When her Vritra blood manifested, she trained with her teacher Scythe Seris; Seris gave her two choices: she could either tell her family about her powers and be sent to the Vritra to be experimented on and turned into a soldier or she could hide her appearance and skills and keep living as the protected daughter of a highblood. When Caera chose to hide, the Scythe gave her a relic that could change her appearance, hiding her horns as well as making her look like Haedrig.
She is a graduate of the Central Academy.
Relationships[]
Grey/Arthur Leywin[]
Caera sees Grey as a unique and mysterious mage, a companion, a close friend and an ally. She took interest in him from the power he displays and the fact he is carrying her brother's dagger. They both know facts about the other that would be considered treason against Alacrya, so they also share a relationship similar to partners-in-crime. Caera knows about Grey's ability to use aether instead of mana to some degree, indicating his level of trust towards her. Although Grey refuses this, saying that he is confident that he could easily silence her if she tries to betray him. After talking with Seris it is shown she has some romantic feelings or a sense of attraction to Grey, as pointed out by Seris during their meeting. Grey also took her to the place where her brother, Sevren, died to which she is deeply grateful for him. Later their relationship became distant after the Victoriad. Seris eventually reveals his true identity to her. She is conflicted because of his lies but decides to forgive him and partcipate with Seris against Orlaeth, and then the rebellion against the Vritra. Later Seris tasks Caera with gathering supporters from highbloods. Eventually, she must go to Dicathen to bring Arthur to Alacrya with Wolfrum, but is betrayed by the latter and barely makes it. However, Arthur was not present as he was in the Relictombs at the time and she was imprisoned by Bairon Wykes. She does not meet with Arthur till two months pass. Unfortunately during this time the dragons arrive in Dicathen and she was tortued by Vajrakor regarding Agrona's plans until Arthur arrives with Varay and breaks her out. She hugs Arthur but slaps him as she was angry at him but he accepts her anger and assures her that he did not know that she was here until now. She watches Arthur argues with Vajrakor and tells him to back off. As the war escaleates, they once again grow distant as Grey cannot completely trust her with his plans because of her alacryan runes. Caera is hurt by this, but nontheless understands, and Arthur apologizes once again after Agrona's initial defeat, and Caera then returns to Alacrya.
Regis[]
Caera knows that Regis is Grey's companion who can talk freely and is fueled by aether and is much different from a normal summon. Regis loves when Caera pats him.
Seris[]
Caera is a student of Scythe Seris who she later sought help from in freeing Grey from the unfair trial put on by the Granbehls. Later, she partcipates with Seris in a full scale rebellion against Agrona.
Highblood Denoir[]
Her adoptive family consisting of Corbett, Lenora, Sevren and Lauden. She is not close to her extended blood except for her uncle, Arden. Her relationship with her parents and Lauden was initially strained, but it improves as time goes on, showing they all care greatly for each other.
Sevren Denoir[]
Caera's oldest foster brother. They used to train together, and she shared his dream of becoming an ascender, which he achieved. He brought Caera on ascents to the Relictombs, which inspired her. Unfortunately, Sevren died in the Centipede zone. When Arthur later killed the Centipede and took Sevren's white dagger, Caera initially attacked Arthur out of anger upon recognizing it. After Arthur explained himself, they moved past the incident.
Nessa[]
Highblood Denoir's servant and Caera's nanny, but her relationship with Caera is more akin to a close friendship. Caera feels she can confide in Nessa, and Nessa trusts Caera's decisions, indicating a bond of mutual respect and loyalty.
Abilities & Skills[]
Being a Vritra-blooded, Caera is naturally strong. Caera is skilled in swordsmanship and fights with a red longsword. She can conjure and manipulate Soul fire, a type of decay-type mana art that consumes anything, but doesn't actually burn. It is also capable of healing the wielder and others by sealing wounds.
- Swordsmanship: Caera is proficient in swordsmanship, wielding a red longsword with finesse and precision. Arthur Leywin notes that her swordsmanship style is remarkably similar to his own, indicating a high level of skill and training.
- Soulfire Manipulation: As a Vritra-blooded human and a deviant fire mage, Caera possesses the ability to conjure and manipulate Soulfire. The flames are capable of consuming anything it touches, but it does not cause actual burning. Caera can use this magical ability to heal herself and others.
- Soulfire Augmentation: Caera can augment her entire body using Soulfire which provides tremendous defense in close combat. She is able to augment her blade with soulfire as well, increasing her offense drastically in battle.
- Soulfire Projectiles: Caera is capable of unleashing soul fire as a ranged attack, such as bullets or large and powerful blasts of it.
- Wind Magic: Caera can use wind-attribute mana.[19]
Items[]
- Red Longsword: Caera's preferred weapon, a long and sharp sword with exceptional durability. It has endured numerous Relictombs Ascents without showing signs of wear, indicating its exceptional quality. The sword can channel mana and be augmented by Caera's Soul Fire, enhancing its effectiveness in combat.
- Soul Ring: A beautiful ring compatible with Caera's Soul Fire abilities, obtained by her from artifacts hidden by the Spear Beak clan, discovered by Grey. The ring can conjure metallic panels that rotate around Caera. Caera utilizes the panels for both defense and offense, infusing them with Soul Fire to enhance their capabilities.
- Conceal Artifact: An artifact used by Caera to conceal her Vritra heritage. Its function renders her horns invisible, preventing others from identifying her as Vritra-blooded. The artificat helps Caera avoid drawing unwanted attention due to her lineage, shown with Grey.
- Disguise Artifact: One of Caera's artifacts that allows Caera to assume the identity of Haedrig, a slim man with curly moss-green hair and deep-set brown eyes. It was used on two occasions in the series: first to assist Grey in his Preliminary Ascent[20] and later during a planned theft at the Central Academy.[21]
